I was referred to the nearest orthopedic surgeon in October...

I was referred to the nearest orthopedic surgeon in October, but have not yet been contacted. I opted to go to Specialist Referral Clinic so that I could get on the waiting list (Jan 27). I have just been informed that I may be on the fall schedule, Sept to Dec. My pain is excruciating, and I don't want to go on addictive pain killers. It looks like we will have to mortgage the house to get the surgery done in the US. At 68 years old, I am not happy with our system!

I was about the same age as you when I was in need of back surgery. My GP said he would get me an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon in Victoria. It took months to even get the appointment booked. When I inquired with the ortho's nurse/receptionist, she said they still weren't booking appointments for the future. If I had gone through the system, it would have taken just shy of two years before I could have my surgery. I opted to go to the Cambie Surgery Centre where the whole thing was taken care of within two weeks of my inquiry.
